Most stocking trouble comes down to measuring: a holder tips when the stocking gets heavy, stockings overlap because they were hung too close, or a nutcracker gets in the way. This guide covers how to hang MacKenzie-Childs stockings on a mantel: holder or hook, spacing, which stocking to pick and what goes on the shelf above. It sticks to the practical side of MacKenzie-Childs Christmas decor and gives the published dimensions of each piece, so you can measure before you buy.

How to hang MacKenzie-Childs stockings: hook, holder or garland

Which method to use depends on what your mantel is made of and whether you can drill into it.

A weighted holder on top of the shelf

A stocking holder stands on the mantel shelf, and the stocking’s loop hangs from an arm that reaches over the front edge. No screws are involved, so it works for renters and for stone, brick or tiled mantels you cannot drill. Dekado has two MacKenzie-Childs stocking holders in stock, both in Courtly Check and both 8 inches tall: the Westminster Sleigh Stocking Holder (3.75″ W × 4.75″ L) and the Westminster Deer Stocking Holder (3.5″ W × 5″ L). Both are resin.

Measure your shelf depth first. Each holder needs about 5 inches of flat surface, plus room behind it for any figures. On a narrow ledge, a hook is safer.

A screw-in or adhesive hook

On a wooden mantel you can drill, a small cup hook screwed into the underside of the shelf is the most secure option, since the weight hangs from the wood and doesn’t have to balance on the shelf. Pick a hook rated above the heaviest filled stocking you expect. Adhesive hooks suit renters. Follow the maker’s weight rating and surface guidance, and test the bond before loading. Dekado has no MacKenzie-Childs stocking hook in stock right now, but a plain hardware-store hook sits out of sight under the shelf.

Tied to a garland or ribbon

If your mantel already has a garland, you can tie each stocking loop to it with ribbon. This only works when the garland is anchored firmly at both ends, because a loose garland sags as soon as the stockings fill.

How many stockings fit and how far apart to hang them

The three regular MacKenzie-Childs stockings are each 8.5 inches wide and 20 inches long, and the width is what you plan the spacing around:

  • Measure the shelf width from end to end.
  • Subtract the ends. Leave about 8 inches clear at each end for a candlestick or figure, 16 inches in total.
  • Divide what is left by the number of stockings. This gives each stocking its own “bay”. Put each holder or hook in the middle of its bay.
  • Check that each bay is at least about 12 inches. That leaves roughly 3.5 inches between 8.5-inch stockings, so they don’t touch when the toes turn or someone reaches in.

84″68″22.7″ (wide gaps)17″ bays13.6″ bays

If the count comes out tight, take space from the ends rather than squeezing the stockings. If the gaps are large, group the stockings toward the center and give the ends to taller decor. Even numbers look tidy mirrored from the center; with odd numbers, line the middle stocking up with the center of the fireplace.

Check the drop too: a 20-inch stocking plus its loop has to clear the firebox opening, screen and hearth tools.

Choosing the stocking: Courtly Check, Traditional Courtly, Timeless Tartan or the Jumbo

With MacKenzie-Childs stockings you are mostly choosing a pattern. The three regular styles share the same size (8.5″ W × 20″ L) and the same fabric, 100% polyester, spot clean only. A luxury Christmas stocking tends to come out every year, so pick the pattern that suits the rest of your room.

  • Courtly Check Stocking: the black and white check with color-dragged detailing. It matches both Westminster holders, which are Courtly Check too.
  • Traditional Courtly Stocking: stripes and checks together. MacKenzie-Childs suggests hanging it from the Westminster Sleigh holder.
  • Timeless Tartan Stocking: navy blue trim, tartan pleats and the check pattern. Choose it if the rest of your mantel is Timeless Tartan.
  • Courtly Check Jumbo Stocking: 45 inches tall, Courtly Check trim on holiday red. MacKenzie-Childs says it is designed to fit more gifts, but the Dekado listing describes it as display decor rather than a stocking to fill, and no holder load is published for it. Treat it as a single statement piece, hung where it has the full drop: the center of a tall mantel, a stair or a doorway.

If you mix patterns, pick a rule: one pattern for everyone, or two patterns alternated (check, tartan, check, tartan) so it reads as planned. Three patterns with nothing repeating tends to look accidental. To tell matching stockings apart, have the cuffs monogrammed: for the Courtly Check, Traditional Courtly and Jumbo stockings, MacKenzie-Childs suggests a local embroiderer.

Making a heavy, filled stocking stay put

Weight is the thing to check on any MacKenzie-Childs stocking holder. Neither MacKenzie-Childs nor Dekado publishes a weight limit for the Westminster holders. Dekado’s own listings describe both holders as weighted to hold a filled stocking, but MacKenzie-Childs’ pages give only material, dimensions and care. A holder that is steady with a light stocking can tip forward once a jar or boxed gift goes in, because the weight hangs off the front edge.

  • Test before Christmas Eve. Fill one stocking with roughly what it will hold on the night, hang it, and let go slowly with your hand underneath. If the holder rocks or slides, the load is too heavy for that setup.
  • Don’t overfill. Put the heavy or boxed gifts on the hearth or under the tree, and keep the stocking for light, small things.
  • Anchor the holder with a small amount of removable mounting putty under its base. Test the putty on a hidden part of the shelf first, especially on stone or painted wood.
  • Use a rated hook under the shelf for any stocking you know will be heavy, and let the holder carry the lighter ones.
  • Hang them empty for display and fill them on Christmas Eve, or take them down and fill them on a table, then hang them back.

Do not leave the polyester stockings hanging over a lit fire. If you use the fireplace, take them down first.

What goes on the shelf above the stockings

Whatever goes on the shelf should frame the stockings without getting in their way. Keep the area right behind each holder clear so nothing gets knocked when a stocking comes off, and put taller figures in the end space you left when measuring.

Our Halloween mantel that works into November is the fall version of this shelf. At Christmas the stockings are the main feature, so the shelf decor sits back.

Lighting the mantel with MacKenzie-Childs candlesticks

MacKenzie-Childs candlesticks are an easy way to fill the ends of the shelf. The Courtly Check enamel candlesticks are hand-glazed enameled steel rimmed in bronzed stainless steel, and the brand describes the tapers as working alone or as a trio:

Do the arithmetic here too. The published diameters run 4.5 to 5.75 inches (the Small taper is listed wider than the Medium, 5.5 against 4.5 inches), so one candlestick fits the 8 inches at each end. A full taper trio side by side needs about 16 inches (5.5 + 4.5 + 5.5), so widen that end space or stagger the trio front to back. NFPA candle-safety guidance says to keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn, and a shelf candle sits right above the stocking loops. Stand real candles well back from the holders and never leave them unattended, or switch to flameless candles. The Timeless Tartan Illuminated Topiary Tree (5.25″ dia. × 18.5″) lights from within, so it gives light at the end of the shelf with no flame. A stockist lists it as taking 3 AAA batteries, not included.

Finishing the look: banner, ribbon and tree skirt

The Merry Christmas Green Banner is green velvet trimmed in black and white check, 6 by 44 inches, and MacKenzie-Childs suggests hanging it above the fireplace. At 44 inches it spans the whole usable width of a 60-inch shelf, so hang it on the wall or mirror above rather than across the stocking loops. There is also a Merry Christmas Red Banner in the same size.

The Courtly Tartan 2.5″ Ribbon is wire-edged and comes as a 10-yard roll, which is 360 inches. At roughly 30 inches for a simple bow, that is up to about 12 bows, fewer if you make them full: one per holder, with some left to tie stockings to a garland or banister.

If the tree is in the same room, the Timeless Tartan Tree Skirt (60″ dia., Courtly Check center with tartan trim) ties it back to Timeless Tartan stockings. For the tree itself, see our guide to MacKenzie-Childs glass ornaments.

FAQ

Can a stocking holder hold a full stocking?

No weight limit is published for the Westminster holders. Test with a realistic load, keep heavy gifts out of the stocking, and anchor the holder or use a rated hook for anything heavy.

How far apart should stockings be?

For 8.5-inch-wide stockings, aim for at least 12 inches center to center: shelf width, minus end space, divided by the number of stockings.

Can I hang stockings without a mantel?

Yes. A stair banister (tied on with ribbon), a sturdy console with weighted holders on top, or a row of wall hooks all work. Use the same spacing rule.

Do MacKenzie-Childs stockings come personalized?

Not as listed. No personalization option appears on the MacKenzie-Childs or Dekado listings. For the Courtly Check, Traditional Courtly and Jumbo stockings, MacKenzie-Childs suggests having the cuff monogrammed by a local embroiderer.
