MacKenzie-Childs glass ornaments fall into three broad kinds: hand-painted figurals that hang on their own, sets of balls and reflectors that fill out a tree, and themed pieces chosen for a particular person or milestone. The right choice depends on which of those jobs the ornament has to do. This guide covers the pieces we carry at Dekado in Brentwood, Los Angeles, with real sizes, where each kind works on a tree, and the trade-offs of hand-painted glass.
What you are buying with MacKenzie-Childs glass ornaments
MacKenzie-Childs describes its current figural ornaments in identical terms: “Mouth-blown hand-painted glass. Brass logo charm included. Pieces may vary due to the handmade nature of each product. Imported.” In practice, two Golfing Santas will not look exactly alike, and that variation is part of what you are paying for.
A few older designs still in our stock carry more detail on the brand’s archived pages. The Farmhouse Holiday Tea Kettle Glass Ornament, accented with silver leaf and Courtly Check, is described as mouth-blown and hand-painted in Eastern Europe and presented in a keepsake gift/storage box. The Emerald Luxe Gifting Santa Glass Ornament uses the same wording. Neither older listing mentions a brass charm, and a keepsake box is not stated for every ornament.
The sets are a different product. MacKenzie-Childs lists the material for its ball, reflector and giftbox sets simply as “Glass”, without the mouth-blown, hand-painted description it gives the figurals; our listing for the finial set reads the same way. The care line is the same for both: “Dust with soft, dry cloth. Store in box to prevent breakage.”
Figural, ball set or finial: which type of MacKenzie-Childs Christmas ornament fits your tree
The Christmas Loft, an ornament retailer with decades behind it, sorts ornaments by role: detailed glass pieces are the focal points you build a tree around, while simpler shapes such as balls, cones and finials do the filling. It recommends shatterproof versions of those filler shapes; the MacKenzie-Childs sets below are glass, which affects where they should hang.
Figural ornaments as the focal pieces
Santas lead the figural lineup. The Christmas Letter Santa sits inside a red envelope with presents, painted with Courtly Check details. The Santa With Truck trades the sleigh for a truck painted in Courtly Checks and holiday colors. The Bake Shop Pastry Santa is an older design, and the Emerald Luxe Gifting Santa, at 8 inches tall, is the largest figural we carry.

Tea kettles are the other familiar shape. The Mocha Check Tea Kettle Glass Ornament is hand-painted with Mocha Checks and measures 4.5″ wide by 5″ tall, the same listed size as the Farmhouse Holiday kettle. If the kettle on your stove is MacKenzie-Childs, a matching ornament is an easy gift; our guide to MacKenzie-Childs tea kettle sizes covers the full-size versions.
For a glass teddy bear ornament, the Aurora Teddy Bear Glass Ornament is 6″ tall, painted with Courtly Checks and a wreath. MacKenzie-Childs says it “evokes the serene, festive environment of our home studio.”
Size varies more than photos suggest:
| Figural | Size (from the product page) | Where it hangs best |
|---|---|---|
| Courtly Check Holly Bow | 1.5″ W × 4″ L × 3.75″ H | Gaps between larger pieces |
| Christmas Letter Santa | 2″ W × 4″ L × 4.5″ H | Mid-tree, at eye level |
| Christmas Vacation Car | 2.5″ W × 5.5″ L × 3.5″ H | A level branch, so it reads side-on |
| Baby’s 1st Balloon Ride | 3″ W × 3″ L × 5″ H | Mid-tree, near a light |
| Santa With Truck | 5″ W × 3.5″ L × 5.25″ H | Inner branch, front of tree |
| Hot Coco | 4″ W × 3″ L × 6″ H | Inner branch |
| Golfing Santa | 3.5″ W × 3″ L × 6.5″ H | Inner branch |
| Confetti Hot Air Balloon | 4″ W × 4″ L × 7″ H | Middle third, with room to hang free |
| Emerald Luxe Gifting Santa | 5″ W × 4″ D × 8″ H | A sturdy branch close to the trunk |
The trade-off with figurals is size. A 7- or 8-inch piece of blown glass on a thin branch tip will droop or swing, and the tip is where it gets knocked. The Christmas Loft recommends keeping glass focal pieces in the middle third of the tree, on interior branches, and we agree.
The Farmhouse Holiday kettle, Emerald Luxe Gifting Santa and Pastry Santa no longer appear on MacKenzie-Childs’ site. We have remaining stock only.
Ball and reflector sets that do the filling
Sets carry a tree’s colors, repeated from branch to branch. The Navy Tartan Glass Ball Ornaments, Set of 6 mixes tartan and blue-checked patterns with gold tops, each ball 3.5″ in diameter. The Traditional Reflector Star Glass Ornaments, Set of 6 are listed at 3″ in diameter by 1.5″, with stripes of white, black, green, gold and red radiating from a crystalline center. The Confetti Reflector Glass Ornaments, Set of 4 are taller at 5.25″, in pink, green, orange and blue with check trim. The Red & Green Giftbox Glass Ornaments, Set of 4 are small black-and-white check parcels, 3″ tall, tied with red and green bows.
These are still glass, and they break like glass. With toddlers or a dog at tree height, the Christmas Loft’s rule is shatterproof only in the bottom third. If you want something in the Confetti colors that is not glass, the Confetti Capiz Circus Ball Ornaments, Set of 4 are made from capiz, 4″ in diameter, in bold color blocks with black and white checks.
Finials and drops for vertical rhythm
A long finial breaks up a tree of round shapes. The Black & White Check Finial Glass Ornaments, Set of 2 are 8″ tall and 2.25″ in diameter. The Christmas Loft calls glass finials among the most fragile things on a tree and suggests the top third, which suits their shape anyway.
Milestone and themed pieces: choosing by the person
MacKenzie-Childs does release dated ornaments; its own site lists a 2026 Santa Wreath, a 2026 Courtly Bear and a 2026 Just Married Carriage this season. Our current lineup does not include a dated piece. For most gifts, an ornament that suits the person does the job as well as a dated one:
- A new baby: the Baby’s 1st Balloon Ride Glass Ornament, in which, as MacKenzie-Childs puts it, “this sweet bear floats among the clouds in a rainbow balloon and a basket of presents.”
- A golfer: the Golfing Santa Glass Ornament, with a tartan hat and trousers and a royal blue golf bag.
- A road-trip family or a car lover: the Christmas Vacation Car Glass Ornament, painted in Courtly Check with a roof of presents. It is long and low, so it needs a fairly level branch.
- A tea drinker: either kettle above, especially for someone who owns the full-size kettle (see our post on the 1-quart tea kettle).
- Someone who lives for winter evenings in: the Hot Coco Glass Ornament, a mug of cocoa with whipped cream and candied peppermints.
Matching ornaments to the check or collection you already own
Courtly Check. The Courtly Check Holly Bow Glass Ornament is the most direct match: a bow in alternating black and white with red and green holly, and the smallest figural here. The Christmas Letter Santa, Hot Coco and Aurora Teddy Bear all carry Courtly Check details too. Our older post on Courtly Check covers the pattern itself.
Mocha Check. MacKenzie-Childs is featuring a new Mocha Check Gingerbread collection this holiday season. The Mocha Check Tea Kettle is our ornament in that pattern.
Confetti. The Confetti Hot Air Balloon Glass Ornament, with Courtly Checks and small presents in its basket, sits naturally beside the Confetti Reflector set and the capiz circus balls.
Tartan. The Navy Tartan ball set, the Golfing Santa’s tartan outfit and the Tartan Raccoon Glass Ornament, in a checked scarf, red sweater and tartan bottoms, make a small, coherent group.
How many glass ornaments to start with, and where to hang them
Plan the tree in order of operations instead of working from a per-foot ornament count. MacKenzie-Childs’ UK site describes a “Thrill, Fill and Spill” approach: the thrill is the topper or centerpiece, the fill is glass ornaments and ribbon that close the gaps, and the spill is picks and extra ribbon. Its suggested order is lights first, then glass ball ornaments working from the bottom up, then personalized or novelty glass ornaments, then ribbon.
In practice, a first-year tree works well as one or two sets for fill plus a handful of figurals, adding a few figurals each year. The Christmas Loft suggests roughly two-thirds shatterproof filler shapes to one-third glass focal pieces. If your fill is the glass sets above, the same height rules apply to them.
Its height zones are a good guide:
- Bottom third: nothing breakable; this zone takes the knocks.
- Middle third: the figurals, at eye level, near lights, toward the front but on interior branches.
- Top third: glass finials and any fill you want for coverage.
Cats are the exception: they come at a tree from the side and from above, so keep glass toward the trunk rather than on the tips. For ribbon, MacKenzie-Childs’ UK site specifically recommends the Courtly Regal Red 4″ Ribbon, Courtly Check against crimson trim, 4″ wide and 5 yards long.
Beyond the tree: bowl fillers and tabletop ornaments
For an ornament bowl filler, the Courtly Ornament Bowl Fillers, Set of 9 are black and white ornaments in varying sizes and patterns with gold glitter caps. They are plastic, which suits a bowl people will pick through. MacKenzie-Childs lists the set at 3″ in diameter and 4″ tall.

The tabletop ornaments leave the tree entirely. They are resin, sit on a surface rather than hang, and come with a gold-toned cap. In MacKenzie-Childs’ words: “Let the ornaments dance off the tree and onto your holiday tablescape.” The Courtly Check Small Tabletop Ornament is 5″ in diameter and 7″ tall; the Courtly Check Large Tabletop Ornament is 10″ by 14″. We also stock a medium stripe size (7.5″ by 10″) and Gold Check, Green Check and Red Check versions, and the brand encourages mixing them.
Caring for and storing hand-painted glass ornaments
MacKenzie-Childs’ instruction for its glass ornaments is short: dust with a soft, dry cloth and store in the box to prevent breakage. The Christmas Loft’s storage advice is to use compartment boxes, wrap pieces in acid-free tissue rather than newspaper, put the heaviest pieces at the bottom, and avoid unconditioned attics and garages, where heat cycling can loosen caps and dull paint. In many Los Angeles homes, that means a closet rather than the garage.
Are MacKenzie-Childs ornaments real glass?
Most of them are. The figurals are mouth-blown, hand-painted glass, and the ball, reflector, giftbox and finial sets are listed as glass. The exceptions in this guide are the capiz circus balls, the plastic bowl fillers and the resin tabletop ornaments. Glass breaks if dropped or knocked, which is why placement and storage matter.
Can they go outside?
We would keep them indoors. MacKenzie-Childs’ care line is written for dusting and boxed storage, and the Christmas Loft does not advise glass ornaments for outdoor use.
Do you carry a 2026 dated ornament?
Not at the moment. The dated 2026 pieces are on MacKenzie-Childs’ own site; our glass ornaments are themed rather than dated.
Are they a good gift?
When the piece fits the person, yes. A figural matched to someone means more than a generic set; a set is the better gift for someone starting a tree from scratch.
